After eight seasons and over 1,000 new and gently used dresses “recycled” to new owners, the Cinderella Project of Maine is excited to announce expansion into the Gardiner area. Girls on the midcoast can still expect and receive dresses at our flagship location at Reny’s Plaza in Belfast, but there will now be a second give away in Gardiner this season as well.
The Cinderella Project will be partnering with the community of Gardiner to expand its reach to that area. Meg Gipson, a teacher at Gardiner Area High School will be spearheading the second site, dubbed “Cinderella Project of Maine at Gardiner”. According to Meg, “Gardiner wants to invest in the wellbeing of its young people, help them thrive, and give them the support they need to excel. The Cinderella Project inspires giving, develops self esteem, and encourages paying it forward. We want to create excitement around an amazing new-to-you gown while teaching financial responsibility to our high school kids.”
The Cinderella Project of Maine was formed in 2006 and has held its giveaway at the former Waltz Pharmacy building in Reny’s Plaza for the last three years. For years, new and gently used prom gowns have been collected from folks all over the country. The gowns are given away to any girl in need- all totally free with one stipulation- we ask the recipients to “pay it forward” and do a good deed for someone else.
The Belfast 2014 giveaway will be Saturday, April 5, 2014 from 9am to 2pm in the Reny’s Plaza in Belfast. The Gardiner giveaway will be Saturday, April 26, 2014 at Johnson Hall, 280 Water Street in Gardiner from 9am-2pm. There is absolutely no cost for any of the dresses, jewelry, or accessories. Dressing rooms will be available to try on gowns, and Cinderella Project staff and other community volunteers will be on hand to assist with the selection process.
Dresses and donations can be dropped off at a number of sites around the state, please see www.cinderellaprojectofmaine.org to find the one nearest you. Additional pick-up locations can also be arranged based on need.
